A recent public health concern has emerged at Palomar High School, where a case of tuberculosis (TB) exposure has been reported, affecting students, employees, and contractors during the previous school year. The County of San Diego revealed that the potential exposure window spanned from February 24 to June 5, 2024. The school is at 480 Palomar St in Chula Vista, and health officials are highly alert.
While the diagnosis of TB can be elusive—the illness can slip under the radar for months—it's essential for those who were potentially exposed to step up to the plate and get tested. Symptoms to look for include "persistent cough, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss," Dr. Ankita Kadakia, County Interim Public Health Officer, described, as per the County of San Diego. The aim is to trace and contain this public health matter before it leads to more widespread issues.
TB is no stranger to the air, hitching a ride through particles expelled by someone coughing, speaking, or breathing with the affliction. The TB bacteria, however, aren't just airborne troublemakers—they can lay dormant and later awaken as active TB if not treated in its latent stage. As Dr. Kadakia noted, it's crucial for anyone with symptoms or who thinks they may have been exposed to get tested. A positive test generally results in a chest X-ray and a medical consultation to ascertain the next steps.
