Indianapolis police arrested three people during a proactive patrol in the city. East District Violent Crimes Task Force detectives, along with the East District Violence Reduction Team, stopped four jaywalkers in the 6200 block of Allisonville Road. What started as a minor infraction quickly escalated, according to an IMPD News post on Facebook.

The response from the jaywalkers was immediate: three ran, spurring a pursuit that involved both local and state police forces. During their escape, two suspects, Rushawn Smith and Ky’Waun Smith, were promptly apprehended following a short chase. Lamarvion Garner, who eluded officers for a brief period, was later found and arrested. He was seen coming out of an apartment in a change of clothes, which he hastily re-entered before resigning to custody moments later. "Following interviews, Garner and R. Smith were arrested for Firearm Possession by a Serious Violent Felon and Resisting Law Enforcement. K. Smith was arrested for Resisting Law Enforcement and Marijuana Possession," as outlined by the IMPD News report.

During the search, a loaded firearm was discovered near where one of the suspects, Garner, had lost his footing. This led to a more thorough investigation, including an explosives detection K9 unit that indicated the presence of another firearm discarded in a backyard. Furthermore, a subsequent search warrant executed at the apartment Garner entered unveiled additional ammunition, firearm magazines, suspected narcotics, and 100 grams of marijuana.

The arrests bring to light serious prior convictions for two of the individuals involved, Garner and Rushawn Smith, making their possession of firearms illegal. Officers at the scene also determined that the fourth person implicated in the initial jaywalking incident had not attempted to flee and was subsequently released. With regards to the fate of those arrested, "The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) will make the final charging decision," the social media post further clarified. It's also worth noting that despite these arrests, all suspects should be regarded as innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law.
