Motorists in Riverton experienced significant delays this morning after a gas line was struck, leading to the temporary closure of Bangerter Highway. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) issued an alert at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, advising drivers that a construction mishap near the intersection of 13400 South and Bangerter Highway caused the leak, as reported by KUTV.
Closures were implemented between southbound 12600 South and northbound 2700 West, with suggestions to use I-15 or the Mountain View Corridor to circumvent the affected segment. According to UDOT Public Relations Director John Gleason, during work on a freeway-style interchange, crews accidentally hit a six-inch gas line. While the road was shut, heavy congestion could be felt across the local arteries that bore the brunt of redirected traffic, as obtained by ABC4.
UDOT worked in conjunction with local emergency services to address the issue promptly. The containment and repair of the leak were carried out meticulously, ensuring public safety remained the paramount concern throughout the ordeal. The reopening of the highway was announced just before 3:30 p.m., as UDOT confirmed that normal traffic patterns could resume following the safe resolution of the incident, as detailed by KSLTV.
