
The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has stepped up its game in the fields of scientific computing and artificial intelligence by naming Salamah Salamah, Ph.D., as its first-ever Associate Vice President for these increasingly pivotal domains, this new appointment was announced in a recent press release. Known for his expertise and leadership in computing and cybersecurity, Salamah is expected to drive strategic research initiatives and bolster UTEP's computing infrastructure to foster innovation across various disciplines, according to UTEP.
Drawing from his impressive tenure as chair of UTEP's Department of Computer Science from 2020 to 2024, Salamah has been credited with the department's significant growth and his pivotal role in earning UTEP recognition as a National Security Agency (NSA) Center of Academic Excellence in several areas, making it among only 11 institutions with all three NSA designations; "The appointment of Professor Salamah Salamah as Associate Vice President reflects his exceptional expertise in advancing computational methods and leveraging his knowledge of utilizing AI to address complex grand challenges," Ahmad Itani, Ph.D., vice president for research and innovation at UTEP, acknowledged the strategic move, as per UTEP.
Beyond expanding UTEP's academic offerings with undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Artificial Intelligence, Salamah has played a key role in establishing partnerships across industry, academia, and government agencies, including the Army Research Lab and the NSA, these collaborations have not only brought in significant external funding but also expanded UTEP’s research capacity in critical areas such as computing and cybersecurity.
