Washington state residents are witnessing a new chapter in the stewardship of their utilities and transportation systems with Governor Bob Ferguson's latest appointment. Brian Rybarik, a seasoned professional with a wealth of regulatory experience, has been tapped to lead the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC). In a statement obtained by the Governor's office, Ferguson remarked on the importance of utility and transportation services, saying, "Washingtonians are impacted every day by the availability and safety of electricity, telecommunications, natural gas, water and transportation."
As the state embarks on an ambitious clean energy transition, the role of the UTC promises to grow increasingly critical. Ferguson believes that Rybarik's "decades of regulatory experience will help to protect these vital services and center people's needs." Rybarik's background positions him uniquely to tackle this challenge. Before stepping into his new role, he helmed a team at Microsoft dedicated to safeguarding the rights of workers within the company’s supply chains and played a pivotal role in advancing Microsoft’s sustainability commitments, as per the Governor's Office.
Rybarik is no stranger to the rigors of regulatory oversight and policy development. His career has spanned a number of significant roles, including his work at the MidAmerican Energy Company, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, and the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin. Beyond his professional endeavors, Rybarik has academic credentials from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned both his bachelor’s degree and law degree.
The Governor's office announced that Rybarik is scheduled to officially take over the reins of the UTC on March 3. With the state's eyes set firmly on a future defined by sustainable and reliable utility services, Rybarik's appointment represents a crucial move to ensure that the path forward not only ensures safety and affordability but also aligns with broader environmental goals. As Washington residents look to the horizon, it's clear that the Commission under Rybarik's guidance is poised to vigorously meet the contemporary challenges of utility regulation and transportation oversight.
