A Bedford man, who served his community as a firefighter, tragically lost his life in a road accident over the weekend. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported that the single-vehicle crash occurred early yesterday morning, and responding deputies arrived at the scene around 6:20 a.m. near the junction of State Road 446 and Dutch Ridge Road, according to FOX59.
Leroy Terrell, identified as the victim of the crash, was found deceased in his 2006 Ford F-350 after it left the road and ended up in a wooded area. Reports from the sheriff’s office suggest slick conditions were a significant factor in the vehicle skidding off the road. Terrell was not just a firefighter, but also served as Captain and Medical Training Officer with the Pleasant Run Fire Department, and worked with multiple fire agencies across Monroe and Lawrence County, as reported by WTHR.
Aside from his role at the Monroe Fire Protection District, where he began as a substitute firefighter in July 2023, Terrell contributed his skills as a firefighter/EMT to both the Lawrence County Fire Territory and the Ellettsville Fire Department. The local fire community mourns the loss of a dedicated member, whose service extended well beyond the call of duty.
While the Monroe County Coroner's Office pronounced Terrell dead at the scene, there was no immediate disclosure of further details surrounding the accident. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, however, emphasized the preliminary conclusions around the hazardous road conditions at the time of the accident. "Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that slick road conditions likely contributed to the vehicle losing control and departing the roadway," confirmed the sheriff’s office to WRTV.
