A somber atmosphere surrounds the community of Burr Ridge as DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Burr Ridge Chief of Police Marc Loftus announced that a local man, Oscar Rodriguez, has been charged with the murder of his mother, Virna Rodriguez. According to the official announcement, Judge Joshua Dieden has denied pre-trial release for Rodriguez following the fatal incident that occurred in the family home last week.
Events unfolded on the evening of February 21, when Burr Ridge Police were called to a distressing scene. Officers found Virna Rodriguez with severe injuries, and she was quickly transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries the following Sunday. The pre-trial release was denied under the weight of these circumstances, with Rodriguez facing upgraded counts of First Degree Murder and Aggravated Domestic Battery as his mother passed away due to the alleged attack.
During the investigation, it's alleged an another individual witnessed part of the attack and was chased by Rodriguez. The details paint a chilling picture, with Rodriguez reportedly breaking through a bedroom door in pursuit of the witness, who then took refuge in a bathroom. Rodriguez later fled the scene and was apprehended by Illinois State Police without further incident a few hours later.
"This is a heartbreaking tragedy for all those involved," Berlin said, expressing his condolences to the victim's family and friends. Chief Loftus shared this sentiment, stating, "I am deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life." The authorities are commended for their swift action on this case, with Berlin thanking the Burr Ridge Police Department, the Illinois State Police, and the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office for their collective efforts.
Evidence collected at the scene included a mini sledgehammer with a substance believed to be blood, found in the surrounding snow. Oscar Rodriguez is scheduled to make his next court appearance on March 13, under the judgment of Judge Mia McPherson.
