The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert following a series of armed robberies in the Auburn Gresham area, urging residents and visitors to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. According to the alert, the incidents occurred within the 6th (Gresham) District, with assailants described as one to two Black males, between the ages of 16 and 20, approximately 5'7" to 5'11" in height, outfitted in all black or dark clothing and black ski masks, and armed with a black handgun.
The latest string of robberies began on January 18, 2025, with an incident on the 7800 block of South Honore St at 7:52 AM. Subsequent robberies were reported on the 1800 block of West 78th St on January 24 at 7:37 PM; on the 1600 block of West 79th St on February 10 at 1:00 PM; and most recently on the 7700 block of South Wood St on Saturday, February 22 at 10:02 AM. In each case, the offenders approached victims, brandishing a handgun before taking property and fleeing on foot, according to the Chicago Police Department's alert.
In the wake of these events, local law enforcement authorities are advising the community to remain alert and report any suspicious individuals or activities immediately. They also emphasize the importance of remaining calm if confronted and trying to remember any distinct physical characteristics of the assailant that could aid in their apprehension. The police explicitly advise against pursuing fleeing suspects and instead encourage witnesses to contact them with any available information, including offering up any video surveillance footage.
Community members are further encouraged to dial 9-1-1 if they find themselves a victim of such a crime, and if safe to do so, remain on the scene until authorities arrive. The authorities also suggest, if approached by witnesses, to gather their contact information for the police. These measures are hoped to aid in the capture of the perpetrators and improve safety for all in the area.
