Local lad Emery Todd is making the most of an internship with the Indiana Senate Majority Caucus this year. Todd, who hails from Columbus and has a connection to the place through both high school and family roots, is buddying up with the state politicians while still a senior at Purdue University. The Columbus Signature Academy New Tech High School grad is putting his public health studies to practical use, seamlessly blending academia with governance.
He's caught the eye of State Sen. Greg Walker (R-Columbus), who had a few choice words about the young intern. "Interns are very helpful to the Senate, playing a key part in helping during session," Walker said. "It is wonderful to see someone from my local community taking advantage of this unique opportunity, and I commend him on all his hard work this session," he added, in a statement obtained by Indiana Senate Republicans.
Todd's hands are pretty full, with tasks that sound a lot more demanding than your typical coffee runs. He's in the thick of it, tracking and analyzing bill data, handling constituent services, as well as staffing Senate committee hearings and meetings. There's also the nitty-gritty of conducting legislative policy research – the kind of work that shapes the intricate tapestry of government dealings.
His tenure at the Statehouse will span the duration of the legislative session, which is expected to wrap up by April 29. Senate Majority interns, like Todd, aren't just window dressing - they play an integral part in the legislative process, diving into the mechanics of policy making, something that could stand him in good stead for a future career.
