Over the weekend, Indianapolis experienced a significant blaze at an east side location, previously a Marsh Supermarkets grocery store. On Saturday night, just before 11:30 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 6300 block of East Washington Street to confront the flames. The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) had to battle the fire for hours, with the situation initially appearing precarious as the abandoned building was engulfed in flames from multiple sides and faced threats of structural collapse, according to FOX59.
The situation grew intense when one side of the building caved within minutes of the IFD arriving on the scene. Firefighters had to navigate around potential dangers such as HVAC units at risk of plummeting from the roof, trenches filled with water, and nearby high tension power lines. The fire was brought under control after an arduous effort spanning over three hours, as described in a report by WTHR.
While the building has been vacant, neighbors have reported that it's not been entirely deserted; squatters were known to frequent the former grocery store. The presence of these uninvited guests has been one component in the ongoing investigation into the origins of the conflagration, which remain unclear. Although the flames have been subdued, the lingering question of what sparked the fire persists.
Fortuitously, the fire did not result in any physical harm to individuals, a point underscored by various sources, including a statement obtained by WISH-TV, which noted that neighbors' concerns revolved primarily around the pattern of squatters entering the building.
