Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) detectives have made a significant break in a series of shooting incidents that unsettled the local community earlier this year. A 20-year-old suspect, Mekhi Bryant, is now in custody facing allegations related to four separate shootings occurring across Indianapolis. The announcement came via a social media post from IMPD News, which detailed the investigation leading up to Bryant's arrest.
The chain of events began on January 16, when IMPD officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of Waterford Place following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found an adult male with a gunshot wound—a bullet that had struck him in the foot while he was inside his apartment. At the scene were several shell casings that, IMPD officers observed, and later collected as evidence. Prior to this incident, on the same night, authorities had responded to shootings at three other households. In all instances, distinct caliber bullets were used and evidence was documented and gathered.
Key to the case were cooperative witnesses and victims who came forth to share their experiences, providing critical insights into the circumstances of each attack. Through meticulous analysis of the forensic evidence and the testimony provided, IMPD Aggravated Assault detectives found a link between the independent cases and identified Bryant as the leading suspect for all four shootings.
Last Thursday, the IMPD Violent Crimes Unit located Bryant on N High School Road, where he allegedly attempted to hide a firearm in his underwear. The weapon he carried matched the distinct caliber linked to the shootings. "Thankfully, he was taken into custody without incident," IMPD News stated in their reported arrest. During a subsequent interview with detectives, Bryant faced arrest for battery with a deadly weapon, and multiple counts of criminal recklessness.
The resolution of Bryant's case now rests with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO), which will make the final charging decision. While the arrest and proposed charges weigh heavily, IMPD News reminds the community that these are merely accusations. Under the law, Mekhi Bryant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty in a court of law.
