Two members of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office were hospitalized last night after their vehicle collided with an 18-wheeler at a Miami Gardens intersection. The incident occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. at Northwest 12th Avenue and 167th Street, with the detectives traveling northbound in an unmarked car while the truck was heading west on 167th Street, WSVN reported.
The crash sent Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to quickly to respond and rush the deputies to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center. They were accompanied by a law enforcement escort. Both deputies were transported as trauma alerts but were described as alert and coherent, with a Glasgow Coma Scale rating of 15, indicating full alertness with abilities to converse normally, according to Local10. Their conditions were stable as of this morning.
At the scene of the crash, the deputies' unmarked vehicle was visibly damaged, surrounded by debris and twisted metal. While they were covered with blankets to conceal their identities, a move common for undercover operatives in such exposed situations, dozens of their colleagues stood vigil outside the hospital to confirm the wellbeing of their own.
No other injuries have been reported in the wake of this stark midnight collision. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office's Traffic Homicide Unit has been slated to investigate to fully understand the circumstances that led up to the accident. At this point, it remains unclear which vehicle may have been at fault for the unfortunate event.
