The San Diego Police Department has released a critical incident video regarding an officer-involved shooting that took place on January 28 at 1100 Kettner Boulevard, San Diego. The SDPD’s commitment to public transparency was the impetus for making the footage available, which can be viewed on their official YouTube channel. An investigation is currently underway following the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old by an SDPD officer.
As reported by Hoodline, the incident began with a battery report at 600 W. Broadway around 8:45 p.m. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, gunshots were soon heard from the nearby MTS Trolley Platform. Officer Daniel Gold of the SDPD, with two years of service under his belt, reached the scene, subsequently engaging with the teenager near 1100 Kettner Blvd., where the shooting occurred. A handgun was found close to the young man, who was critically injured and later confirmed dead at a local hospital.
The seriousness of an officer discharging their weapon means that investigations from multiple agencies are underway. The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is tasked with evidence collection and conducting witness interviews to unravel the sequence of events leading up to the fatal shooting. Additionally, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office will review the incident for any potential criminal liability concerning Officer Gold's actions.
