In a tragic incident yesterday evening in Randolph County, an 18-year-old driver, Shawn Lane Jr., was severely injured and his passenger, 19-year-old Devon Lumpkin, was killed in a single-vehicle crash, as confirmed by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to the scene near State Road 227 and the intersection with U.S. 36 after the black 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck, driven by Lane Jr. of New Castle, Indiana, reportedly failed to yield to a stop sign, consequently losing control and veering off the road, according to FOX59.
The crash occurred around 6:15 p.m. and involved the vehicle rolling multiple times before striking a utility pole; the passenger, Lumpkin from Union City, Ohio, was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene while Lane Jr. was transported with serious injuries, as detailed by WISHTV; moreover, Lane Jr. was later airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital, confirmed a spokesperson for the sheriff's department. The site of the accident, roughly five miles east of Lynn, Indiana and just west of the Ohio border, saw local fire departments and the Randolph County EMS responding alongside law enforcement.
With the investigation ongoing, no definitive cause of the crash has been announced. However, a WTHR report suggested that disregarding the northbound stop sign may have been a factor. Among the first responders were the Lynn Fire Department, Winchester Fire Department, Union City Fire Department, and the Randolph County Coroner’s Office, all present at the scene of the tragic event.
