Two firefighters sustained minor injuries this past Saturday while tackling a blaze on Peoria's West Bluff, in a residential area near Peoria High School. The Peoria Fire Department responded to a call just before 1:10 p.m. from West Richmond Avenue where they encountered flames emerging from the roof and attic of a residential property, according to Battalion Chief Josh Martin in a statement obtained by 25News.
Despite the fire crews' swift action, knocking down the fire within five minutes of their arrival, the smoky chaos of the fire resulted in two firefighters receiving treatment at the scene for minor injuries sustained as Central Illinois Proud indicated the conditions they faced were 'intense fire conditions' that billowed heavy smoke. As a consequence of the incident, a man and a woman have been displaced from their home, however, the American Red Cross is stepping in to provide housing assistance, the details of which Martin shared.
An electrical issue was identified as the cause behind the blaze, pointing to a larger discussion about housing safety and infrastructure maintenance. This electrical malfunction led to substantial damages estimated at $75,000.
Residents and passersby could witness the firefighters' efforts to subdue the spirited onslaught of the flames which were described by the Peoria Fire Department.
