During these calls, victims are transferred to other fraudulent "higher-ranking officials." The Boone County Sheriff's Office has clearly stated, "IT'S A SCAM!" and reassured the public that official members of law enforcement would never solicit payment over the phone, demand unconventional payments like gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, threaten individuals to remain on the line, nor send court orders via text or email.
Emphasizing the need for vigilance, the Boone County Sheriff's Office has put forth a set of precautionary measures to help citizens protect themselves from these predatory attempts.
