An investigation into a double shooting in Indianapolis abruptly transformed into an officer-involved shooting incident on Friday. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Southeast District officers were called to a report of a person shot on the 1300 block of Riley Place. On arrival, they discovered two adult males with gunshot wounds, leading to one victim being rushed to the hospital in critical condition and the other being pronounced dead at the scene, as detailed in an IMPD News social media post.

Witnesses at the Riley Place scene provided a description of the alleged shooter, which was rapidly broadcast to officers. Officers were quickly able to pick up the trail when directed by local community members to the intersection of Prospect Street and S Emerson Avenue. Here, an IMPD officer confronted the alleged shooter, who, according to body-worn camera footage, raised a firearm towards the officer. This led the officer to unavoidably shoot and wound the suspect, who was then apprehended and taken to a hospital in stable condition.

In a statement obtained by IMPD News, detectives believe the suspect is responsible for shooting the two individuals before fleeing. A photograph of the firearm discovered near the suspect has been released. Thankfully, no bystanders were harmed during the incident, and detectives are confident there is no further threat to the community. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, indicating standard procedure in such cases.

IMPD's Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct a criminal investigation, and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is also assisting. An administrative investigation is being carried out by IMPD Internal Affairs. The Use of Force Review Board, which includes civilian members, will eventually review the case after the criminal process concludes to ensure mandatory hearings are conducted for any attempt of deadly force against a person.

Any additional information regarding the case is being sought by IMPD, and individuals with knowledge of the incident are encouraged to contact Detective Dustin Keedy or Crime Stoppers, where information can be given anonymously. The ongoing investigations will also include contributions from the Marion County Coroner’s Office to determine the exact manner and cause of death, with the decedent's identity being released post next-of-kin notification.
