In a tragic unfolding of events at a Lansing Walmart, a 66-year-old woman fell victim to gunfire in the store's parking lot. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Victoria Olson of Thornton was shot multiple times around 1:45 p.m. on Saturday. Adebowale Oyelekan, a 40-year-old Lansing resident, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident. According to the same source, she was taken to an Indiana hospital where she was shortly after pronounced dead.
Law enforcement officials were quick to arrive on the scene following reports of the shooting at the Walmart located at 17625 Torrence Avenue. NBC Chicago details that Olson was found struck by gunfire, and despite the on-scene medical care provided, her injuries proved fatal after her transfer to the hospital. Further information on the motive or the circumstances leading up to the incident has not yet been disclosed. NBC Chicago also reports that, despite the violent event, authorities believe there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Oyelekan is set to appear in court in Markham, as stated by Lansing police officials. Meanwhile, the Lake County, Ind. coroner's office has ruled Olson's death a homicide. Memories of the once bustling and safe-feeling Walmart lot are now marred by the weekend's grim occurrence.
The collaborative investigation draws upon the expertise of Lansing police, the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigators.
