A Logansport police officer and his wife are facing charges of child neglect after their daughter was found standing in the cold holding a disturbing sign. According to WTHR, on January 19, a passerby reported a young girl outside in 18-degree weather with a sign that read, “I want to stab and kill my brother.”

Following the incident, Officer Cody Scott was placed on unpaid leave during Wednesday's Board of Public Works and Safety meeting, reported by McClatchy News. Logansport Police Department, reached out for comment, has stayed quiet regarding the incident, which reflects an involvement of their own. Police Chief Travis Yike stated to WRTV in an email that the "Logansport Police Department does not have a comment on the situation involving (the officer)."

Rebecca Gibbs, the individual who reported the incident, expressed her revulsion in the face of such an act by a law enforcement officer. "I am a mother myself. I felt it was sickening – disgust. That's what it was that somebody could do that to a child and to know that that’s a police officer who did that to a child, that's even worse. It was horrible. I wouldn't let my dog sit outside for an hour, let alone my child," she told FOX59. The Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety Committee has indicated that an internal investigation will commence once the criminal investigation is concluded.

Both Cody and Kylie Scott are scheduled to appear in court for their initial hearing. While the details of the case continue to surface, the community's attention turns beyond an officers' alleged misdeed to ponder the systems that are supposed to protect the vulnerable.
