A tense situation unfolded in Northwest Indiana earlier this week, with a "romantic rivalry" quickly escalating into a shooting and SWAT intervention. As detailed by WGN-TV, Portage police were dispatched to the 200 block of Greta Court around 4:20 p.m. following reports of a gunshot victim. The investigation revealed the shooting had occurred at another location, with the 28-year-old Hobart man actually being shot in the 300 block of Jacobs Place before being moved.
The victim was subsequently airlifted to a trauma center and is expected to make a recovery. Police have reason to believe the shooting may have resulted from a dispute between James Ferguson, 27, of Chicago, and the victim over an unnamed party. In a bid to locate the suspect, authorities issued a call to action, which ended up being successful in the early morning hours. Ferguson's vehicle was found in the 1600 block of Bluebird Court in Lowell.
When SWAT units arrived on the scene, they were informed by two women and an infant that Ferguson was inside the house. "After failed attempts to negotiate, a chemical agent was deployed at the home in an effort to drive him out," WGN-TV reported. This strategy proved effective as Ferguson was taken into custody without further incidents. He faces charges of aggravated battery and also had active warrants out of Lake County.
Further details on the case were provided by FOX 32 Chicago, outlining that Ferguson is currently being held without bond at the Portage County Jail. "The felony charge of aggravated battery is subject to change after review by the prosecutor’s office," the outlet noted. His apprehension followed a dramatic standoff where Portage detectives and SWAT officers, having to use chemical agents, eventually managed to bring an end to the situation.
