Tacomans brace for a significant closure expected to last six to eight weeks starting around March 26, as the city continues to work on the Prairie Line Trail's Phase II development. According to the City of Tacoma, South 21st Street between Jefferson and Pacific avenues will be off-limits for traffic as crews proceed with improvements, including trail construction, sewer updates, and even some pavement restoration.
The Prairie Line Trail project, which kicked off in early 2024, is integral to expanding the city's active transportation network, forging paths from the waterfront to downtown. Although the street will be closed, the adjacent Interstate 705/State Route 509 interchange near Pacific Avenue should remain unaffected. Detours will redirect westbound drivers north or south on Pacific Avenue, keeping through traffic flowing despite the construction squeeze.
While Dolly Roberson Loop Road will stay open, those venturing through the area should keep their eyes peeled for posted detours, guiding them to alternative routes along South 15th Street or South 25th Street. For those seeking real-time project updates, the city has made information available online at its capital projects portal and through portable message boards positioned at strategic locations around the affected areas.
Should community members have lingering questions or concerns about what the Phase II expansion of the Prairie Line Trail means for their commute or daily routine, they're encouraged to reach Project Manager Clara Dubow. She can be reached at [email protected] or (253) 208-4161 for more detailed information.
