The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is reminding drivers that the use of studded tires is permitted only until March 31. All studded tires must be removed by the end of the day to avoid a potential $137 fine. As service centers anticipate increased demand, drivers are encouraged to schedule tire changes in advance.
In Washington, the use of studded tires is allowed from November 1, 2024 through March 31, with no exceptions after this period, even for out-of-state drivers. The Washington State Patrol will begin issuing tickets starting April 1 for those who don’t comply. Drivers crossing state lines should note that Oregon also follows this same deadline, though other states may have different rules, according to WSDOT.
WSDOT has the ability to extend the deadline under specific weather conditions, though the current forecast does not suggest an extension will be necessary. The mountains, however, may still experience late-season snow. For travel in these areas, WSDOT advises using approved traction tires and keeping chains on hand. Crews are prepared to address any unforeseen winter conditions.
The reason behind the deadline is financial. Studded tires, while providing better traction, contribute to significant damage to the state’s roads. "Studded tires cause between $20 million to $29 million in damage to Washington's state-owned roads each winter, in addition to damaging city and county roads," said James Morin, WSDOT Maintenance Operations Manager. Morin suggests using non-studded winter tires as a cost-effective alternative that still offers good traction, as per WSDOT.
