Two Fishers natives, Emily Boezeman and Marielle McConnell, are getting a hands-on education at the Indiana Statehouse. As part of a cohort of interns, they are currently working with House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) and other state representatives during the 2025 legislative session, as reported by Indiana House Republicans.
Huston has lauded the efforts of the interns, stating to Indiana House Republicans, "Emily and Marielle are working hard to serve constituents assist us in the lawmaking process this session." Both women are undertaking responsibilities that include correspondence with constituents and staffing various legislative proceedings. Huston believes the skills and connections they're shaping will significantly impact their future careers.
Emily, currently a junior at Taylor University with a focus on politics and law, spoke to the value of the experience. "I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the legislative process," she told Indiana House Republicans. Similarly, Marielle, a political science major at Purdue University, expressed, "I have loved growing personally and professionally through working in the Statehouse."
The internship program is designed to offer college and graduate students a glimpse into the intricate workings of state government while providing them with invaluable real-world experience. According to the Indiana House Republican release, interns like Emily and Marielle are tasked to regularly communicate with constituents and directly contribute to the legislative sessions by staffing committee hearings and floor proceedings. It's a rare chance to actively engage and to quickly adapt to the fast-paced environment of state politics.
The Indiana House of Representatives opens this opportunity annually to students and recent graduates.
