
In a significant drug trafficking case, Fermin Castro-Tovar, a 26-year-old Mexican national, has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for his attempts to distribute over 38 kilos of methamphetamine in Utah. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Castro-Tovar, living illegally in the United States, entered a guilty plea on January 14 to a charge of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Castro-Tovar's illegal activities came to light in May 2024 when he sold methamphetamine during a controlled purchase to agents from the Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force; subsequent investigations led to the seizure of large quantities of the drug across several locations, including Castro-Tovar's residence and another associated apartment, the combined raids netted a total of 38,838 grams of methamphetamine, acting U.S. Attorney Felice John Viti of the District of Utah underscored the importance of disrupting drug trafficking to protect communities from the dangers posed by such substances.
Senior U.S. District Court Judge Ted Stewart imposed the sentence on Castro-Tovar. The U.S. Department of Justice stated that the prosecution is part of a broader initiative known as Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which is designed to foster trust within communities and reduce violent crime through collaborative law enforcement efforts and supporting organizations focused on preventing violence before it occurs.
As per the U.S. Department of Justice, the severity of the crime was accentuated by Special Agent in Charge Mehtab Syed of the Salt Lake City FBI, who noted that "the amount of methamphetamine in this case potentially amounts to hundreds of thousands of doses" the FBI's Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force utilized extensive resources to curb the supply of illicit drugs at significant levels, these task forces represent a unified approach involving local, state, and federal agencies to combat high-level criminal operations, as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation.
