Orlando Mitchell, convicted of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend, Krystal Walton, outside of an Indianapolis daycare, has been sentenced to 66 years in prison. A Marion County judge imposed the sentence, 65 years for murder and an additional year for an invasion of privacy charge. As reported by FOX59, in September 2022, Mitchell stalked Walton and ambushed her by the daycare, firing multiple shots and leaving her to die.
During the incident, police located Mitchell on North Delaware Street, armed with two firearms, one being a rifle he was seen carrying at a bus stop. WISH-TV detailed that upon officers' approach and command to drop the weapons, "at that time, officers discharged their service weapon." Mitchell was shot at least once.
Prior to her tragic demise, Walton had reported Mitchell to authorities multiple times. Four months pregnant, she feared for her safety after suffering abuse at his hands, with choking incidents mentioned in a probable cause affidavit from March 2021, as detailed by WISH-TV.
Aside from the case involving Walton, Mitchell faces charges in the death of Deputy John Durm. Transporting Mitchell from the hospital where he had been treated for gunshot injuries, Durm was allegedly strangled by Mitchell, who escaped with a police vehicle before his capture on July 10, 2023, near the Marion County Criminal Justice Campus. According to WTHR, the trial for Durm's murder will occur at a later date, a case that remains separate from Walton's.
