In a move to directly address the city's housing crunch, Raleigh has dug in on a new affordable housing development. As reported by the City of Raleigh, the groundbreaking ceremony of Parkside Apartments marked a significant advancement in the battle to provide reasonably priced homes for those caught in the gears of an escalating market. The project, nestled at 1327 and 1329 Kent Road, aims to place families within easy reach of employment, schooling, and essential public services.

The venture stems from a collaborative effort initiated back in November of 2023 when the City scooped up the property through funds earmarked for affordable housing. This partnership, tying Raleigh and Wake County closely, has led them to collectively pour roughly $11.7 million into the project. According to an announcement given by the City of Raleigh, when completed, the Parkside Apartments will house 144 units designed to provide a range of living options suitable for different family sizes and income levels.

The apartments will be segmented into 36 one-bedroom, 60 two-bedroom, and 48 three-bedroom options. To particularly assist families earning between 30% and 80% of the median income, which for a family of four amounts to about $35,100 to $93,600 annually, they've designated all units accordingly. Emphasizing the support for those most in need, the project designates 65 units for families earning half the median income or less, and around 43 units are reserved for individuals with disabilities.

Residents can look forward to amenities that promise to transcend basic living. These include a fitness center, a playground, a gazebo, outdoor grilling spots, a business center, and a space for community events. Situated close to downtown Raleigh, public transportation, NC State University, and major job centers, Parkside Apartments aims to foster a vibrant, inclusive community. Construction is set to wrap up in 2026, with the City championing the cause of cultivating diverse, accessible neighborhoods.
