Two schools in San Diego County just nabbed top honors for their green initiatives, joining the ranks of institutions recognized for exceptional strides in sustainability and environmental education. According to a San Diego County Office of Education announcement, Bella Mente Montessori Academy in Vista Unified School District and Community Montessori were celebrated with the California Green Ribbon Schools award. Furthermore, the National School District struck gold, literally, by securing the Green Ribbon Gold status award.

Bella Mente, earning distinction as one of only five "Green Achievers" in the state, shines with its comprehensive Energy Action Plan. This plan was crafted following a critical 2018 energy audit and includes student-led projects dubbed "Energy Guardians" that advocate for energy efficiency. With their adoption of solar panels and LED lighting, energy expenses and greenhouse gas emissions took a notable dive. "Our California Green Ribbon Schools exemplify the values of innovation, resiliency, and creativity that drive our efforts to make every school community a healthy and sustainable learning environment for our students," State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond was quoted as saying, per the San Diego County Office of Education.

Community Montessori didn't fall too far behind, securing its place among 29 schools honored with the Green Ribbon Bronze status for their dedication to sustainability. In doing so, these institutions not only chalk up benefits for their immediate communities but also model conservation-minded behaviors for students statewide.
