Starting on April 28, construction will begin on State Route 302 near Victor in Mason County to remove a fish barrier. The Washington State Department of Transportation will replace two culverts under the road that block fish migration. Delays are expected during the work.
The transportation department will build a new 42-foot-long bridge over Victor Creek to follow a federal court order. The current culverts block the movement of fish like salmon, steelhead, and bull trout. To keep traffic moving during construction, a single-lane temporary bypass road will open on April 28, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The Washington State Department of Transportation says that "The current 40 mph speed limit will be temporarily reduced to 25 mph between milepost 4.0 and milepost 4.3 during construction." Two signals will control traffic, allowing vehicles and bicycles to take turns moving through the area. Drivers are advised to expect delays. The project is scheduled to be finished by fall 2025. Updates are available on the Washington State Department of Transportation app and the Washington State Department of Transportation Travel Center Map.
