For those reliant on State Route 411 through Cowlitz County, a recent culvert failure has imposed a significant detour, as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has barred freight traffic from this vital artery. The compromised culvert near Waters Road, which was discovered in early March following substantial rainfall, has led to a sizeable sinkhole, prompting officials to restrict passage to lighter vehicles in an effort to prevent further roadway degradation. Crews have responded with initial makeshift fixes and continue to monitor the situation routinely, according to WSDOT.
A closure on SR 411, also known as West Side Highway, impacts the stretch from Hazel Dell Road to Delameter Road, specifically from mileposts 6.2 to 11.3, trucks over 10,000 gross vehicle weight (GVW) will have to seek alternate routes, and according to Maintenance Superintendent Aaron Yanez, the imperatives of safety have necessitated this exclusion of heavy vehicles, "But safety is our top priority, and keeping heavy trucks off this road helps prevent more damage so we can keep it safely open for travelers until repairs can be made," Yanez told WSDOT.
Beginning at 8:00 a.m. today, the closure for heavier vehicles will be in effect until an indefinite time when the culvert can be safely repaired, while smaller vehicles such as passenger cars and motorcycles will still be able to traverse the route, albeit encouraged to decelerate and look out for potential hazards like loose gravel covering the damaged section of the highway. Despite the challenges imposed on freight mobility, measures are taken to maintain access for emergency vehicles and local deliveries to the affected zone, WSDOT has outlined the accommodations allowing for essential services to persist.
