A school trip took an unexpected turn this morning when a tour bus burst into flames on a Utah highway. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office reported that the bus, carrying schoolchildren from Colorado, caught fire near Milepost 101 on SR 191. At approximately 9:36 am, local emergency services rushed to the scene, successfully evacuating all passengers with no injuries, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident caused a closure of the highway for roughly an hour, during which fire crews from various agencies worked to extinguish the blaze. The tour bus occupants were quickly taken care of, thanks to swift coordination between several local entities. San Juan County Sheriff's Office stated, "We would like to give a huge shoutout to the San Juan County School District and the Grand County School District for allowing us to use their resources to transport and, look after the kids from Colorado."
In the aftermath, the children were transported to a middle school in Moab, Utah, to await a replacement bus that would return them to Colorado. This quick relocation was facilitated by the San Juan County School District which provided the necessary transportation. Despite the potential for tragedy, the response to the incident demonstrates a robust emergency protocol and community support.
