After a relentless seven-month investigation, the Escondido Police Department has brought closure to a tragic hit-and-run case that cost 58-year-old Miguel Leonides Garcia his life. Lair Marin Salas, a 42-year-old Escondido resident, has been arrested and faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run following the September 17, 2024, incident, as per the Escondido Police Department.
Garcia was fatally struck by a truck while on his morning walk to work at the crossroads of Mission Avenue and Broadway, the truck's driver fleeing the scene, leaving behind a shadow of grief and a slew of unanswered questions. After the vehicle was finally located and painstakingly analyzed, Salas was pinpointed as the driver. According to the Escondido Police Department, Ryan Banks, the Interim Chief of Police, affirmed the detectives "spent hundreds of hours investigating this crime," with their "expertise, attention to detail and analysis of the evidence, justice will be served for the victim’s family."
The gray 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser linked to the crash was found before Salas's arrest, marking a significant lead in the extensive inquiry. This development was previously reported by Hoodline, which detailed the public's role in feeding crucial information to authorities, further bolstered by a direct appeal from the Traffic Division for witnesses to come forward.
