Last Thursday, an electric vehicle fire in Mountain View caused a stir when a Jeep Wrangler EV caught fire while charging. According to the City of Mountain View's official website, the incident occurred in the 1300 block of Shorebird Way in the parking lot of a commercial office building. Reports of smoke led to a 9-1-1 call at 4:52 p.m., with fire units responding within a minute.
The Mountain View Fire Department arrived at the scene by 4:59 PM, six minutes after dispatch. An active fire from the charging EV had not only engulfed the Jeep but also spread to two nearby Teslas and a Honda. Firefighters managed to quash the flames using a fire-attack hose line, and luckily, there were no injuries. However, the damage is significant, estimated at $275,000, including the vehicles and the charging station.
The cause of the fire was linked to the Jeep's lithium-ion battery charging system.
