Murfreesboro Police Department detectives are in the midst of an ongoing investigation following the grim finding of a deceased man inside a 2007 Hummer H3 at a local tow yard, as confirmed by WSMV. The body was discovered by employees of E.A. Towing, who were preparing to enforce a mechanic’s lien on the vehicle, which had remained unclaimed after being towed from a Walmart parking lot on April 5th for being abandoned.
Upon noting an unusual odor and the presence of flies emanating from the rear of the SUV, workers utilized a tool to unlock the vehicle and unearth the body on a sleeping mat in the flattened back seat area. The windows of the Hummer, covered with blackout material, made it difficult for anyone to ascertain the situation inside from the exterior, NewsChannel 5 reports.
An autopsy is currently being conducted to deduce the cause of death and the duration for which the man had been deceased in the vehicle, according to the details provided by the Murfreesboro Police Department. In the meantime, E.A. Towing and Walmart have been absolved of any misconduct, with authorities citing their full cooperation in the investigation. This status was confirmed in a statement obtained by both WSMV and NewsChannel 5.
The Murfreesboro Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit received the call to the scene at around 2:30 p.m on Thursday (May 1st), as workers at the tow lot embarked on their due process to salvage their lien against the abandoned vehicle. Further developments are pending, in light of the forthcoming autopsy results, as mentioned by WGNS Radio. With investigators withholding additional specifics until then, the local community is left to grapple with the unsettlement that comes when death, unannounced, meets the mundane backdrop of daily commerce.
