The Budget Committee has greenlit funds earmarked for much-needed repairs at Horsemen's Camp within Brown County State Park, following the recent devastation wrought by a tornado. State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) and State Rep. Dave Hall (R-Norman) have been vocal proponents of the financial aid, which totals $925,542 to be pulled from the Repair and Rehabilitation Funds. According to a statement from the Indiana House Republicans, these repairs are crucial for the equine-centric site, which was sorely affected after May’s tornado.
"Horsemen's Camp is a very important part of Brown County State Park and the equine industry, contributing over $320,000 in annual revenue and bringing in out-of-state visitors," Koch proudly noted, stressing the significance of the camp's role not just in recreation, but also in the local economy. Hall emphasized the importance of swift action, saying, "This funding is a big win for our community and for everyone who enjoys the outdoors." These repairs aren't just about fixing a camp; they're about reviving a communal space that has long been a draw for horse enthusiasts and outdoor lovers alike.
Koch, who holds several positions including chairman of the Senate Committee on Utilities and ranking member of Senate committees on both Commerce and Technology and Judiciary, represents Senate District 44. This district encompasses several Indiana counties, where outdoors recreation significantly bolsters the local communities' economies. Hall, serving as the vice chairman of the House Committee on Utilities, Energy and Telecommunications, represents House District 62 — including all of Brown County, parts of which are definitely feeling the absence of the Horsemen's Camp in the wake of the storm.
The decision to fund the Horsemen’s Camp repairs was made following a letter authored by Koch and Hall, lobbying for the financial assistance needed to get the camp up and running once again. With the committee's approval, the park looks set to welcome back its many visitors and their horses to the scenic trails and equip them with necessary amenities. "I'm grateful to the state Budget Committee for helping to make this possible," said Hall, reflecting a sentiment likely shared by many of Brown County's outdoor enthusiasts and members of the equine industry.
