Earlier this morning, in a sobering reminder of the fragility of life on city streets, a pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Fort Wayne.
The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) responded to a distressing call at approximately 4:00 a.m. at the intersection of Lima and W. Dupont Roads. Upon their arrival, they discovered an injured adult male, the apparent victim of a collision. As per FWPD's statement, the pedestrian was crossing the intersection when a southbound vehicle on Lima Road collided with him.
Emergency medical personnel provided immediate care at the scene before transporting the man to the hospital for further treatment. Despite the swift action of first responders, the prognosis appeared dire; the injuries were classified as life-threatening. FWPD's Fatal Accident Crash Team was summoned to take the lead in the ongoing investigation, an indication of the critical nature of the situation.
The aftermath of the early morning crisis prompted closures on the roads, specifically northbound traffic on Lima Road, as investigators worked through the details of the incident. Alcohol and speed, often egregious catalysts in such tragedies, were not believed to be factors this time. FWPD's Sgt. Gutierrez was quoted, "Currently, alcohol and speed do NOT appear to be contributing factors."
