Governor Mike Braun has signed House Enrolled Act 1198 into law, a measure aimed at improving the efficiency of local government operations in Indiana. The legislation, co-authored by State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville), increases the threshold for public works projects that cities, towns, and counties can complete using their own labor forces—from $250,000 to $375,000. This limit will now be reviewed annually and adjusted for inflation.
According to the Indiana House Republicans release, the law also removes the requirement for architectural or engineering approvals on minor projects such as painting or basic repairs. This change is intended to reduce procedural delays on routine maintenance work.
Additionally, HEA 1198 extends the deadline for starting federally funded projects from 60 to 90 days, allowing more time for planning and preparation.
The bill passed through the Indiana General Assembly with bipartisan support.
