The dream of teaching is set to become a reality for a handful of local students, thanks to the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship. In a generous move, the state has awarded scholarships to several aspiring educators, a funding boost aimed to help them through college as they prepare to take up the mantle in Indiana's classrooms. State Rep. Matt Lehman (R-Berne) highlighted the program's intent to support future teachers and related the good news.
"The Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship supports aspiring teachers by easing college expenses as they prepare to guide Indiana's classrooms," Lehman said, as reported by the Indiana House Republicans. This scholarship aims to not only alleviate the financial burden on students but also to eventually enrich the educational landscape of Indiana. For the 2025-2026 year, nearly 300 scholarships were awarded out of a record-breaking 1,091 applicants.
The recipients from various local high schools are a testament to the program's reach. Among those chosen are Rehgyn Brooks and Sarah Bueter from Bluffton High School, Andrea Curtis and Mackenzie Selzer from Bellmont Senior High School, Jackson Garcia Litwiller and Delia McClain from South Adams High School, Hallie Mounsey from Southern Wells Jr-Sr High School, and Bristow Shultz from Adams Central High School.
In order to qualify, Lehman notes that students had to either graduate in the top 20 percent of their high school class, earn a score in the 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT, or maintain to have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The scholarship, which can be renewed, offers up to $10,000 per year, capping at $40,000 total for those students agreeing to teach in an eligible Indiana school for five years after graduation.
For high schoolers and college students looking to follow in the footsteps of this year's recipients, the next round of scholarship applications opens in the fall. Interested parties can find out more details and how to apply by visiting the Learn More Indiana website or directly emailing [email protected] for inquiries. It's an opportunity for the next generation to not just dream but also actively shape the future of Hoosier education.
