Efforts to tackle the burdensome issue of medical debt are underway in Indiana, as the state legislature's summer study committee has announced its intention to examine this pervasive problem. State Senator Fady Qaddoura (D-Indianapolis) has been a vocal advocate for addressing the crisis of medical debt, which, according to a statement he released, "impacts an estimated 40 to 50 percent of adults in Indiana." With around $2.2 billion currently in collections, the urgency of this matter cannot be overstated, according to Indiana Senate Democrats.
Championing financial health alongside physical well-being, Qaddoura argued, "Medical debt doesn’t just affect credit scores, it follows individuals into every aspect of their lives, limiting access to housing, job opportunities and economic mobility," as reported by Indiana Senate Democrats. In a recent legislative session, he introduced Senate Bill 317 aimed at combating the hardships entailed by medical debt; however, it failed to pass by a narrow margin, falling 26 to 23 in the Senate.
Not deterred by this setback, Senator Qaddoura continues his crusade for change, and the study committee is seen as the next critical step. Believing firmly in reformative action, he insists to Indiana Senate Democrats, "We must stop penalizing people for getting sick." His commitment to undo the unjust burdens of medical expenses is accompanied by a focus on those most vulnerable, who disproportionately bear these financial burdens without reprieve or remedy.
Despite the previous defeat of his bill, Senator Qaddoura remains steadfast, proud to have proposed the committee "to continue the conversation." The Senator's dedication to finding solutions that will lift people up, not hold them back, is poised to foster collaboration across political divides. He anticipates working closely "with my colleagues, stakeholders and experts to explore meaningful solutions that can protect the health and financial well-being of Hoosiers," he said in a statement obtained by the Indiana Senate Democrats.
