Lake County students with their sights set on becoming the educators of tomorrow have scored a win with the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship. The Indiana General Assembly crafted this program through legislation back in 2016, offering up to a hefty $40,000 over four years to high-achieving scholars. This initiative arrives with the condition of a five-year commitment to teaching in eligible Indiana schools, launching careers and ensuring the state's classrooms remain in capable hands. An unprecedented 1,091 students threw their hats into the ring for the 2025-2026 academic year, and nearly 300 emerged victorious with scholarships in hand.
"Indiana is always looking for new talent to lead our classrooms," State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) told Indiana House Republicans in a statement. Reflecting this pursuit, the local scholarship recipients herald from a diverse array of institutions: Emily Bantsolas of Illiana Christian High School; Claire Benton from Lowell Senior High School; Myah Donovan, hailing from Hebron High School; Charles Ganske and James Hairston, both representing Hobart High School; Tionna Hall of Merrillville High School; Alexandra Magallanes from Bishop Noll Institute; Miles Verpooten of Crown Point High School; and Joshua Wooge, making Lake Central High School proud.
The accolades don’t just symbolize financial assistance; they underscore a belief in the competence and dedication of future educators. According to State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point), "Teachers play such an important role in shaping our young people and future leaders." Congratulations, she says, are in order for these scholars "for stepping up to guide the next generation of Hoosiers." The standouts who've merited the scholarship have met stringent criteria, boasting graduation in the top 20 percent of their high school class, earning top scores on the SAT or ACT, or maintaining a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
The sentiment is echoed by State Rep. Hal Slager (R-Schererville), who reminded everyone, "A scholarship like this recognizes the hard work and dedication of our future teachers." He continues, "I commend their decision to pursue this critical role in the state of Indiana," in a statement to Indiana House Republicans.
