On Saturday, a shooting occurred along the downtown canal in Indianapolis, leaving a juvenile and two men injured. The incident happened just before 3:30 a.m. near Indiana Avenue, West Michigan Street, and North West Street. Officers who were patrolling the area responded to gunshots and found the three victims, who were taken to a local hospital in stable condition. Multiple shell casings from a handgun and a rifle were found at the scene, along with the firearms. Several individuals were detained, but their connection to the shooting is unknown. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the area between St. Clair and New York Streets, and a dive team was seen working in the canal, according to FOX59.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has not released information regarding the cause of the incident; however, Ofc. Drew Brown denounced the action in a statement obtained by WTHR, lamenting the use of violence in what is considered a family-friendly location, "We had a few individuals who were involved in some sort of disturbance who made the deliberate decision to bring firearms to a gem of our city, one of the most beautiful family-friendly places in our city, and to bring violence to that area and to pull the trigger and subsequently lives were changed forever because of this and the whole entire city can feel that impact."
Despite disturbances, the shooting is considered an isolated incident with no ongoing public threat. Police have not confirmed if the individuals were familiar with each other, but Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Public Information Officer Drew Brown suggested that they might have known each other, stating, "We had a few individuals involved in some sort of disturbance, who made the deliberate decision to bring firearms to a gym of our city — one of the most beautiful, family-friendly places in our city — and to bring violence to that area and to pull the trigger. Subsequently, lives were changed forever because of this," as mentioned by WISHTV.
