The Berkeley community is currently reeling from a tragic accident at Sylvia Mendez Elementary School, where construction subcontractor and father of seven, Jonathan Dillard Guidi, lost his life after falling from scaffolding. According to Alameda County Sheriff's Technician Brandi Foscalina, as reported by NBC Bay Area, the Sacramento resident was just 41 years of age when the fall, which took place on July 24, claimed his life. Guidi was discovered critically injured and later passed away despite being rushed to the hospital.
The incident is being investigated by several parties, with the Berkeley Police Department conducting a death investigation and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) actively working to examine if any workplace safety regulations have been violated. In a statement obtained by The Berkeley Scanner, it was conveyed that Cal/OSHA investigations could take up to six months to reach completion.
In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, Guidi's friends and family have taken action to support his bereaved family through a GoFundMe campaign. The effort aims to relieve some financial stress, detailing that "JD was the heart of every room he entered — the kind of person who lit up a space with his laugh, his goofy jokes, and his even goofier dance moves." The same GoFundMe page stresses the importance of the funds.
