Jay County now boasts a bridge named in honor of a local fallen hero, Lance Cpl. Andrew Whitacre, thanks to a legislative resolution authored by State Rep. J.D. Prescott. The dedication ceremony for the "Lance Corporal Andrew Whitacre Memorial Bridge," which spans the Salamonie River on State Road 67, took place last Thursday, preserving the memory of a brave Marine who gave his life for his country in 2008. In attendance alongside Prescott was State Sen. Travis Holdman, with both legislators paying tribute to the sacrifice Whitacre made while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
According to Indiana House Republicans, it was a poignant moment for the community as they gathered at Jay County Jr.-Sr. High School, Whitacre's alma mater; the ceremony carried a profound significance as it anchored not only the bridge but also the valor of a man into the soil and heart of the town where his journey began, Whitacare's service and ultimate sacrifice were honored by representatives, family, friends and those who carry the weight of freedom on their shoulders and in their hearts without exception to every passing motorist, the bridge now serves as a lasting emblem of valor, reminding citizens of the cost of freedom.
The late Marine, a 2005 graduate of Jay County Jr.-Sr. High School, was posthumously honored with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His actions during an ambush in 2008, where he sacrificed himself to protect his comrades, have enshrined him as a hero in the community. Prescott emphasized the importance of the dedication, noting that Whitacre's courage "continues to inspire the Jay County community."
During the dedication, Prescott expressed to the gathered crowd and according to Indiana House Republicans' official statement, “This bridge will stand as a testament to Lance Cpl. Whitacre’s bravery and the enormity of his sacrifice," the impact of Whitacre's actions continually echoes through those who remember him, and now, the legacy of his service is solidified in the form of this bridge memorial, a poignant tribute to a life that, though ended too soon, continues to resonates through the generations and narratives of a grateful nation.
