Last Friday, a welfare check conducted by St. Lucie County deputies uncovered a scene—an elderly woman, severely malnourished and living in a state of extreme neglect. According to WPBF, the deputies described the conditions of the residence on Orange Avenue as "extremely hazardous and unsanitary," with the woman weighing around 90 pounds and surrounded by a collapsing structure, insects, and several cats. The reports indicated a complete lack of running water in the home, and the elderly woman had visible feces on her body along with insects in her hair.
Among those present in the residence was 56-year-old Melanie Hess, identified as the caregiver for the elderly woman. While both individuals lived in the same home, authorities noted a difference in their physical conditions. This contrast is part of the ongoing investigation. According to details shared by WPBF, Hess has been arrested and charged with neglect of an elderly disabled adult without great harm, and she is currently being held in the St. Lucie County Jail.
The elderly individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken for medical evaluation following the discovery. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances, which involve concerns related to the care provided within the residence.
Additional reports from Ozarks First confirmed Hess's booking into the St. Lucie County Jail on the count of neglect. As the investigation remains ongoing, authorities have not provided additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the reported caregiving concerns.
