A Chicago man now faces charges following a shooting that left three people injured at a Berwyn bar last month. Ricardo Gutierres, 36, has been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and one count of aggravated discharge related to the incident, which took place in the early hours of June 28th at Junior's Bar & Grill, as reported by ABC7 Chicago.
Detailed by Berwyn police, the shooting unfolded around 1:38 a.m. on Ogden Avenue. Following a dispute that escalated outside the establishment, shots were fired through a bar window injuring three individuals inside. Despite the violent altercation, all victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were subsequently treated at local hospitals. The community, grappling with the aftershock, voiced its concerns, with neighbors like Leo Torres highlighting the importance of security, "Me and my wife are starting a family, so that's really something where we're coming from, safety most of all," he told CBS News Chicago.
Following investigative efforts, Gutierres was taken into custody without incident on Monday after a search warrant was executed at his Chicago residence. The arrest brings a measure of response to the Berwyn community, still reeling from the recent violence. As the owner of Junior's Bar & Grill continues to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, they have refrained from making further statements.
Local governance and law enforcement's approach to such incidents has now been thrust into the public sphere, as some residents like Torres express dissatisfaction with their newly elected alderman, suggesting a need for more evident action. "He just got elected running on a ticket of transparency, promoting business safety, etc. All those good things, but these are those moments where, he should step up," Torres pointed out in his comments to CBS News Chicago. Public calls for leadership in the wake of violence underscore a broader conversation on community safety and the role of elected officials.
