Michel Duarte Suarez, a 50-year-old Cuban national, has entered a guilty plea in the case of an $800,000 heist from the bank account of an 82-year-old individual. Directing operations from his residence in Panama, Suarez's scheme involved the use of fraudulent checks and forged signatures, which he sent to South Florida for cashing, with instructions to wire half of the stolen funds back to him, as detailed by the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida.
After being indicted in September 2023, Suarez remained at large in Panama City until January 2025, when he was finally apprehended and extradited to South Florida, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office. The theft, spread over four months, was meticulously planned and executed, feeding into a larger narrative of rising financial crimes targeting vulnerable seniors.
On September 29, Suarez will be sentenced by United States District Court Judge Kathleen M. Williams in Miami. He faces up to 30 years for the conspiracy charge and a mandatory two years for aggravated identity theft. Suarez's conviction serves as a reminder of the robust legal mechanisms in place to counteract such deceptive practices. He has admitted guilt on two counts.
The collaborative efforts of various law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, FDIC-OIG, and the U.S. Secret Service, underlined the gravity of the crime, and the dedication to bringing perpetrators to justice. Announced by U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne, and with Special Agents Brett Skiles, Jason Scalzo, and Rafael Barros taking leading roles, the case exemplifies interagency cooperation in tackling cross-border fraud, the USDOJ noted.
The prosecution of the case is managed by Assistant United States Attorney Alexander Thor Pogozelski, while Assistant United States Attorney Marx Calderon handles asset forfeiture proceedings.
