A Eugene man has been taken into custody on serious charges involving a child after diligent work by multiple law enforcement agencies. Reid Michael Squires, 23, is facing charges that include Rape in the First Degree, Sodomy in the First Degree, and Sex Abuse in the First Degree, with a victim reported to be under the age of 12, according to official reports from the City of Eugene. The arrest is the outcome of combined efforts by the Eugene Police Department (EPD) and the Lane County Sheriff's Office (LCSO).
After a Eugene Police patrol officer was alerted to the alleged sex crimes last Friday, the investigation swiftly moved forward. Against Squires, the family of the young victim had confronted him, following which he absconded from his home. As detailed by the City of Eugene, a search warrant was obtained by both a patrol officer and a detective from the EPD's Violent Crimes Unit. They also initiated a widespread 'attempt to locate' through an inter-agency communication that included outlining the Probable Cause.
Squires was spotted after a Lane County Sheriff's deputy recalled having previously encountered someone fitting Squires's description at an encampment for the unhoused. This tip led EPD's Street Crimes Unit officers, along with VCU detectives and LCSO deputies, to search the Veneta region. Just by a public pool in Veneta, Squires was located last Tuesday and despite initially giving a false name, was safely arrested.
He now awaits legal proceedings, lodged in the Lane County Jail for the aforementioned crimes. As per the report, detailing the strength of the collaborative law enforcement operation, the Eugene community remains notified of this ongoing matter. The EPD has issued a case number 25-11496 for reference to this arrest and subsequent investigation.
