Early Friday morning, a fire incident at Geneva Middle School North was swiftly contained, causing only minor damage to the building. According to CBS Chicago, the local fire department responded to a fire alarm at approximately 4:15 a.m., as moderate smoke was detected on the first floor of the school located at 1357 Viking Drive. Fire Chief Mike Antenore detailed that activated smoke detectors led crews to a small blaze in the northeast section's common/instructional area.
The incident, which saw no one present in the building and resulted in no injuries, was quickly managed by the school's sprinkler system before firefighters definitively extinguished the fire. "The preliminary cause of the fire stemmed from a malfunctioning carpet fan that ignited with flames extending to the janitor's cart," Antenore said. Adjacent areas sustained damage from the fire, heat, smoke, and water. Assisting the Geneva Fire Department were teams from Elburn, Batavia, St. Charles, and Fermilab, alongside the Geneva Police Department.
Shaw Local reported that the school's automatic alarm system notified firefighters, and upon arrival, they found the fire already being suppressed by sprinklers. Despite this, the blaze was upgraded to a General Alarm, calling in additional resources from neighboring departments. District 304 Superintendent Andrew Barrett mentioned that insurance officials were evaluating the damage by noon to assess the cost of repairs required for the school.
The community is relieved that the situation was resolved swiftly, and with the structure largely intact, the hopes for a speedy recovery seem achievable. "A fan being used to dry freshly cleaned carpet at Geneva Middle School North caught fire," as stated in the school and city releases, emphasizing the preliminary cause as an equipment malfunction.
