Chaos broke out in a North Miami neighborhood yesterday afternoon when a police chase involving a stolen car ended in a frenetic exchange of gunfire, leaving two officers with minor injuries and a 17-year-old male critically injured. North Miami Police and Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputies responded to the incident around 4:15 p.m. at an apartment complex on Northeast 137th Street and Fourth Avenue, as Local 10 News reported, the involved officers exchanged fire with the suspects after a stolen car was identified in the lot.
North Miami Police Chief Cherise Gause confirmed that "something happened that led to officers firing their weapons" and as a result, "a male subject was shot multiple times," he was transported to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, according to information provided by Local 10, the teenager's condition, as well as the circumstances surrounding the shooting, remain under tight scrutiny while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement carries out an investigation; two suspects are currently in custody though their identities have been withheld.
The sequence of events that led to the shooting has not been entirely pieced together, though witnesses described a chaotic scene where, possibly after a vehicular pursuit, the driver of the reportedly stolen car pulled into a driveway and refused to yield, leading up to the momentary standoff – a woman was seen exiting the vehicle before shots rang out, however, this account has not been officially verified by authorities.
Authorities have asserted that there is no continuing threat to public safety, but for residents near the blockaded scene, the reassurances have done little to abate fears. In a statement obtained by 7News, a local resident recounted being turned back by police and expressing a sentiment of unsettledness, stating, “Well, I’m not comfortable. I’m not safe at all, so it’s like kids don’t go outside or anything.” Law enforcement presence remained pronounced as the area was cordoned off for several hours while officers conducted their probe into the events of the shooting.
In response to the day's violence, Chief Gause emphasized the inherent risks of police work, saying, "The police work that we do each and every day, officers are putting their lives on the line, so everyone knows that this can be a very dangerous profession." The community is being urged to come forward with any pertinent information that might assist in the ongoing investigation. Tips can be directed to the North Miami Police Department, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, or anonymously through Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS, where informants may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000, as reported by 7News.
