In a significant boost to first responders, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alongside the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM), declared the provision of $5 million in grants earmarked for the development and refurbishment of fire stations across the state, a move set to bolster community safety equipment and infrastructur,e particularly benefiting rural departments. The announcement detailed the inaugural awards from the Fire Station Construction and Rehabilitation Program to 16 different grantees, empowering these local fire departments and districts with the necessary funds to carry out critical repairs, updates, and construction projects.
"I am proud to be celebrating inaugural Fire Station Construction and Rehabilitation Program awards, a crucial lifeline for fire departments across the state - particularly those in rural areas - to upgrade their facilities and equipment," Governor Pritzker told news outlets while emphasizing the value these investments play in preserving community safety, firefighters from small and often underfunded departments will likely hail this program as a much-needed support to enhance their ability to serve. The grants are part of OSFM's extended effort to aid fire services in Illinois in locating necessary resources that may be otherwise unavailable.
Fire Marshal Michele L. Pankow expressed gratitude towards her predecessors for their commitment to securing this funding "I want to thank my predecessors for their hard work and dedication in securing this funding, which now allows departments like those receiving these grants the opportunity to construct or rebuild stations—ultimately helping to keep their communities and firefighters safer," she said. Ranging from $28,415 to the maximum of $350,000, the grants awarded to entities such as the Tamms Fire Department and the Village of Chapin Fire Department will be instrumental in transforming the landscape of fire safety and response in locales from Alexander to White counties.
Selected through a stringent Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) process opened to various fire-related departments and districts, the grants signify a nationwide push towards better-resourced emergency services, a measure that not only ensures better protection for citizens but also attends to the well-being of firefighters who confront danger to safeguard lives and property every day.
