An IMPD officer has been placed under arrest after allegations of harassment and official misconduct surfaced, according to reports from various Indianapolis news outlets. Officer Nicholas Cauley, a nine-year veteran of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, was arrested following an investigation that began with a complaint from his ex-wife.
On June 24, the IMPD North District received an email complaint regarding Cauley's behavior. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) promptly took charge to fully investigate to ascertain the validity of the claims. According to WISH-TV, SIU detectives found evidence that Cauley had repeatedly attempted to contact his former spouse despite her numerous requests for him to desist. It's reported that Cauley also misused his authority as a police officer to access her license plate information. This behavior culminated yesterday when Cauley was taken into custody and preliminarily charged.
Focusing on the importance of trust and ethical conduct within the police force, IMPD Chief Chris Bailey emphasized the need for corrective action. "The trust our community places in us is built on accountability and integrity. When any officer violates that trust, it’s our duty to act quickly and transparently," Chief Bailey asserted in statements obtained by FOX59 and later echoed by The IndyStar.
In the wake of his arrest, Cauley has been placed on administrative leave. The department has also collected his police-issued equipment, and he has been suspended from performing law enforcement duties. These actions signal the department's commitment to closely collaborate with the prosecutor’s office to ensure this case is properly investigated, as mentioned in both FOX59 and The IndyStar reports.
The final decision on charges will be made by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. Meanwhile, Cauley remains in custody at the Adult Detention Center.
